DescriptionThe National Leprosy Eradication Programme, NLEP is under implementation in the State since 1982 to 1983. The programme is being supported by WHO, West Bengal through the Government of India and international agencies like Lepra India, GLRA etc. Since the beginning of the programme, 825944 cases have been cured with MDT and now only 4177 cases of leprosy are on record in the State. All patients are undergoing Multi Drug Therapy. The broad objectives of the Programme are: I. To eliminate leprosy by detecting all the cases of leprosy from the community and bringing them under Multi Drug Therapy, MDT. Thus bringing down to a level of one or below one case per 10,000 populations, so as it will no more be a public health problem. II. To achieve the goal of leprosy elimination in every block by 2010. III. To achieve reduction in PR at State level from 1.2 per 10000 population to 0.5 by 10000 population by 2010. IV. To achieve reduction in NCDR from 5.87 per 10000 population to 1 per 10000 population. V. To integrate NLEP with ICDS and PRI. VI. To provide quality care services to leprosy patients and disability cases through GHCS.
